It was 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon and we had just concluded a very long…long business meeting. I was thirsty and a bit cranky for having to sit through a meeting that accomplished very little.  I needed to reward myself, and what better place than the newest restaurant in Long Beach, CA, Fourth & Olive.img_0759

Fourth & Olive is the vision of a disabled Veteran who worked with The Jonas Project to make his dream of a gourmet restaurant come true, and he succeeded.
Of course it was my first time there, but when I walked through the door I immediately knew that I was going to love this place.  Every wait staff welcomed me with a smile and Daniel, the owner, came over and gave me a big welcoming hug.

Besides having a full bar and a very attentive bartender, my waitress was well informed with all items on the menu. So I made it my mission to sample as many different dishes as my stomach capacity would allow.

Here’s how it went:

img_5375-1I started the evening in the SNACKS category of the menu with the Pickled Plate – all the pickling is done in house – it was an incredible and delicious assortment of pickles that were delicate and left my mouth popping from the perfect balance of vinegar and flavor. The next snack was the Duck Liver Mousse with pickles and toast. Again, the perfect delicate balance of flavors and textures. And finally a Radish Salad and Buttered Baguette.  I was already quite full but I had to keep going because there was so much incredible food still to conquer.

Next, I moved on to the SAUSAGES served with Sauerkraut and Mustard.  The three types of sausages are all smoked and presented over a bed of homemade sauerkraut and homemade mustard.  There was so much delicious food served that all I could do was sample each sausage before moving on to the entrée.

The entree I chose was the Pork Shoulder Chop with Roasted Apple, Fennel, Cipollini, Mustard Seed, and Brown Butter.  This was the most tender, most tasteful piece of pork I have ever eaten and I will be going back again and again for this meal.

Daniel has made his dream come true.  The chef he has on staff is so talented, his kitchen staff are great individuals but work beautifully as a team, his wait staff are friendly and well informed and appear to be truly happy to be working there.
